Aequale, or equale, are an old musical form, meaning a piece or pieces written for a group of ‘equal’ instruments. Traditionally music performed at funerals, they were most often performed by a group of trombones, as in the equale of Beethoven (trombone quartet) and Bruckner (trombone trio).
My 3 Aequale are written for a quartet of equal instruments. They’ve been written in such a way that they are suitable for trombone, cello or bassoon quartets.
